Behind Us

When you purchase a Rattan product from us, you are supporting handmade artisan work in small local communities that still survive from craftwork in Indonesia. Be proud in acquiring an ecological product as the rattan/ata is a natural grass.
What is Rattan? Rattan in Indonesian language is called Ata or Ate in Balinese language. It is a type of fern which has being used for Indonesians in the process of making ropes, baskets, and other materials for a really long time. This natural material has similar properties such as bamboo, however it is lighter and more flexible than bamboo. The rattan vines are hand-woven and interlaced by artisans with the final product being a basket. After that, the rattan baskets/bags are dried in a process which involves a coconut fire in ovens in order to dry and make it strong as well as to acquire their desired distinctive colour pattern.
The production process is extremely delicate and very time-consuming, which makes the bags so special and unique. The process of making one basket could take a skilled artisan from hours to several days to be made depending on the type of ornaments it has got.
After meeting and creating a partnership with a family of craftswomen, we have learned everything about their land, soil, rattan fibre and all the different processes of making a bag. This way we could support small communities and hand craftwork in Indonesia and also support local businesses in Australia where straps, snaps, handles and linings are placed.
Each bag is unique, handmade of a natural material, stylish, very sturdy, and well made.
